Antique Victorian Maltese ring featuring three rubies and four seed pearls. The ring features a Maltese cross, this symbol is associated with the Order of St. John since the middle ages and the island of Malta. The ring has a number of hallmarks indicating the piece is 15ct yellow gold hallmarked in Birmingham, England.
In the 15th century of the Maltese Cross represented eight lands of the Knights Hospitaller: Auvergne, Provence, France, Aragon, Castille and Portugal, Italy, Germany, and England.
The eight points of the cross also represented the following: live in truth, to have faith, to repent one's sins, to give proof of humility, to love justice, to be merciful, to be sincere and wholehearted and to endure persecution
